Frequently Asked Questions

IS THIS FOR STUDENTS OR TEACHERS/ IS THIS RIGHT FOR ME?

This is a student Intensive-To provide a foundation for anatomy, philosophy, traditional studies, establishing you in a daily Mysore practice, Sanskrit, vinyasa counts, physical adjustments, and how to teach a Half Primary class. It is not exclusive to teachers, in fact we encourage beginner students to participate as a way to deepen their practice. We do provide a 200 RYT as we are a Yoga Alliance compliant school, but ultimately the Intensive is very focused on the student experience.

If you are interested and have an existing Mysore practice of at least Half Primary, please send your completed application, head-shot style photograph, and letter of recommendation from your teacher.

DO YOU OFFER AN OPPORTUNITY FOR SCHOLARSHIP?

We are offering 2 scholarships for our July 2018 course. 1 to cover 100% of tuition costs and 1 to cover 50% of tuition costs. See ‘API SCHOLARSHIP’ tab for more details.

IS THIS ASHTANGA INTENSIVE GOOD FOR SOMEONE WHO HAS A HOME PRACTICE?

This intensive is absolutely recommend if you have a home practice. This Intensive is directed to the student experience, and allows one to become firmly rooted in their physical practice as well as establish a foundation in anatomy, philosophy, traditional studies, sanskrit, adjustments and vinyasa count. It would serve well to expand fundamental knowledge as well as having the chance to practice under the expert guidance of Tim and Kino for a month. Having their eyes, mind, and hands available to refine the practice so you have something workable to take home with you would be very beneficial.

WHEN ARE THE CLASSES?

There is class every day during the Intensive. There are breaks daily and Sundays are off, as well as some lighter days here and there. But know the course runs usually 7am-6pm-ish every day.

IS THIS INTENSIVE A TEACHER TRAINING?

This course is defined as a One Month Ashtanga Intensive with a focus on deeply rooting the student in their daily Ashtanga Mysore practice while providing a strong foundation in Anatomy, Sanskrit Studies, Traditional Yogic Texts, Philosophy, Yogic Breathing and more. The Intensive does include courses and testing on how to teach all of the Half Primary sequence with traditional vinyasa counts, physical adjustments and alignment. However, this is an aspect of the overall focus of the course which is considered a learning intensive, not a teacher training. That being said, as we are a Yoga Alliance accredited school, all of our courses meet the qualification standards for a 200hr course and, as a result of successful completion of the course, students are provided a 200hr course credential. This is not a replacement for extensive and repeat travel and study in Mysore, India at KPJAYI, as only Sharath R. Jois can provide Ashtanga Authorization.

WHAT IF I DON’T ALREADY HAVE AN ESTABLISHED MYSORE PRACTICE?

If you can commit to a mysore practice (at least 5 days a week) between now and the start of the course, you’re moving in the right direction! Our course focuses on Ashtanga Mysore Style. What this means for you personally is making sure your body and mind are prepared for a month of extremely vigorous physical training. You will be doing traditional Mysore-style practice six days a week as well as exerting afternoon techniques workshops.

We want to be sure your body is prepared to prevent burnout, exhaustion and injury. Additionally, you will need to come in to the workshop with an established Mysore practice of AT LEAST Half Primary or more memorized.

WHERE CAN I STAY DURING THE ASHTANGA INTENSIVE?

Your best bet is Air BnB. It is easy to find and book accommodations at good rates. There are many apartments to rent in the area, walking distance from the shala… and very close to the beach!

We also recommend looking at the Sunrise Court apartments. It is on Lenox Ave. It’s walkable, and has full amenities.

Also check the Hotel St.Augustine. The Fashion Boutique Hotel. Villa Italia. The Savoy. And Urbanica Meridian

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICATION?

In order to be considered for enrollment a full application package must be submitted and include the following items: a completed application form, a recommendation by a yoga teacher, a complete response to the questionnaire form, a photo of yourself, a completed Miami Life Center signed release & waiver form, and a signed agreement to payment terms form. The applicant is completely responsible for obtaining any passports or visas required for travel as well as meals and accommodations.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENT FOR THE RECOMMENDATION LETTER?

A recommendation from a teacher who knows the student helps us with a look into their practice and commitment to yoga. we prefer a recommendation from an ashtanga based teacher if they have such but in the lieu of that whomever they practice is fine. we like to hear about who long they have worked together, what the experience has been from the teacher perspective, what they consider the students potentials and challenges to be, whether they find them physically and mentally ready to pursue a one month all day intensive, and whatever else the teacher finds relevant.
