The Essence of Sadhana — A Weekend with Tim Miller

Tim Miller has been studying and teaching Ashtanga Yoga for over thirty years and was the first American certified to teach by Pattabhi Jois at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore, India. Tim has a thorough knowledge of this ancient system, which he imparts in a dynamic, yet compassionate and playful manner. “My goal as a teacher is to inspire a passion for practice. The practice itself, done consistently and accurately, is the real teacher.”

FRIDAY
8-8:50am Pranayama $30
9-11:30am Mysore Practice $50

6-8:30pm Taming the Mind $50
“Roots and Wings—The Mysterious and Elusive Bandhas”.
Foundational to the practice of Ashtanga Yoga is the application of Mula Bandha and Uddhiyana Bandha to bring steadiness and lightness to the body, length and smoothness to the breath, and concentration to the mind.  Through an exploration of different asanas and pranayamas we will discover how the proper application of the bandhas can take our practice to the next level of “Mindfulness” by tempering the excessive Rajasic quality of our minds. (Light practice, suitable for anyone)

SATURDAY
8-8:50am Pranayama $30
9-11:30am Enlightening the Body $50
“The Primary Series of Asanas—An Archetype of Sadhana”.
A brief synopsis of Sadhana Pada (Chapter Two of the Yoga Sutras) followed by Yoga Chikitsa (Primary Series), a systematic and profound methodology for reducing Tamas by detoxifying the body, removing excess Apana from the system, and quite literally, bringing us to our senses.  The class will conclude with the Hanuman Chalisa—40 verses in praise of the embodiment of perfect Sadhana (Hanuman). (Strong practice)

2-4:30pm Consulting The Jungle Physician $50
Good teachers and practitioners recognize that the practice of yoga involves work on the physical, psychological, and spiritual levels of the human being.  Tim brings 35 years of practical experience as a yoga teacher, extensive study of anatomy, pranayama, yoga philosophy, Indian mythology, Jyotisha (Vedic astrology), mantra, and kirtan to better assist his students in their Sadhana.  This will be an open forum to ask yoga related questions—on therapeutics, biomechanics, evolution of practice with age, history of ashtanga yoga, pranayama, yoga philosophy, etc. (No practice)

SUNDAY
8-8:50am Pranayama $30
9-11:30am Enlightening the Body Even More $50
“Nadi Shodana—An Introduction to the Intermediate Series of Asanas”
An explanation of the purpose of the second series and its relationship to the Pranamaya Kosha (Energy Body), the Chakras, and the Kundalini Shakti, plus an introduction to Nadi Shodana that includes an in depth preparation for some of the more challenging poses, like bhekasana, kapotasana, and eka pada sirsasana (strong practice)

2-4:30pm Unveiling the Spirit $50
“Polishing the Mirror—Pranayama, Mantra and Kiran”
An exploration of the practice of Pranayama and Mantra to cultivate the Sattvic quality and awaken the Buddhi (the awakened mind), and a grand finale of Kirtan to take us Nirguna (beyond the Gunas) and into the Anandamaya Kosha (the abode of bliss) (No asana)
* All sessions except pranayama are 2.5 hours. Pranayama is approx 45 minutes.

Tim Feldmann is the director of Miami Life Center, the yoga shala he founded with his wife Kino MacGregor. He was set on the yoga path by his first teacher Lino Miele and is Authorized to teach directly by the founder of the Ashtanga Yoga Method, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, and his grandson, R. Sharath Jois. A practitioner of the Advanced A series Tim is dedicated to Ashtanga Yoga’s traditional method.

“The body is the way to our spirit, to our true Self. That’s what asana is for”.

A near fatal falling accident in 1992 led Tim on the yogic path. His teaching integrates extensive studies of F.M. Alexander Technique and sitting meditation with 20 years of experience as a professional dancer and an internationally acclaimed choreographer. His in-depth knowledge of functional anatomy, alignment as well as the idiosyncratic body and mind in stillness and in motion creates the platform upon which his solid understanding of the Ashtanga method rests. Tim’s humorous, straight forward yet profound teaching style makes him a cherished teacher, traveling extensively throughout Asia, Australia, Europe and the Americas.

Friday
6-8PM Guided Primary Series
8-830PM Q&A

Saturday
9-11am: Mysore Style
2-4pm: The Root of Asana – Yogic Breath, Part I
This class helps you locate your pelvic floor, your first step towards Mulabandha and your doorway to understanding the inner body, finding calmness of mind and firm yoga postures. Taking base in simple yogic breathing and light movement you will learn how to identify, activate and use the power imbedded in your pelvic region. Through asanas such as Surya Namaskara, jump-thrus and forward bends you will learn how to optimize your innate potential for strength, stability and energy. All Levels Welcome.

‘That which is the root of all existence and on which the restraint of the mind is based, is called The Restraining Root (Mula Bandha) which should always be adopted since it is fit for Raja Yogins.’  – Sankaracharya/Aparoksanubhuti

Sunday
6-8am: Mysore Style
2-4pm: The Breath Body / Yogic Breath, Part II
Finding your ‘Breath Body’ increases your aptitude for lightness and grace. But what is the breath body and how do you find it? This session explores the subtle body’s effect on your yoga practice. The connection between flexibility and breathing cannot be overestimated – a compromised breath makes for a stiff body. Working with simple twists and backbends you will learn how to identify, release and use your body’s innate potential for easing deeper into bending through breath awareness. You will leave this class with a blueprint of how to practice with more pleasure and less pain, while bridging the physical with the energetic. All Levels Welcome.

‘As the big bird soars, so the Yogin defies death like a lion over an elephant. This is how Uddiyana Bandha should be performed.’ – Yoga Chudamani Upanishad

No single sessions. Full workshop: $250
Limited to 35 people
